Saturday - 18th Day of Lent

"And the Lord turning looked on Peter, And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, as He had said; 'Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny Me thrice." and Peter going out wept bitterly" (Luke 22, 61-62)

Prelude:

Behold Peter, bitterly bewailing his sins.

Affections:

Lord Jesus, oh, that my contrition and penance resembled that of the Prince of the Apostles! Alas, I fall so frequently and am so slow to rise after a fall. Peter sincerely and bitterly bewailed his sins, but ah, how insufficient is my compunction! O my dear Savior, give me true, sincere contrition and compassion for Thee, that by redoubled fervor and love of Thee, I may repair the many infidelities of my past Life.

Friday - 17th Day of Lent

"And Peter followed Him afar off, even to the court of the high priest, And going in he sat with the servants that he might see the end" (Matt. 26, 53)

Prelude:

Observe Peter warming himself at the fire among the soldiers and servants of the high priest.

Affections:

O Divine Savior, what bitter drops in Thy chalice of sufferings must the denial of Peter have been! He had solemnly proclaimed his faith on a former occasion, had received countless marks of Thy special affection, and now he denied Thee out of detestable human respect. I must confess that I, too, have often acted as basely. Henceforth, it shall be so no more . I will belong wholly to Thee, my heart shall beat for Thee alone.

Thursday - 16th Day of Lent

"And the men that held Him mocked Him and struck Him. And they they smote His Face. And they asked Him, saying: 'Prophesy, who it is that struck Thee?' And blaspheming, many other things they said against Him" (Luke  22, 63-65)

Prelude:

Behold Jesus in the midst of the brutal soldiers and servants, who maltreat Him most shamefully.

Affections:

O my Jesus, I see Thee endure the greatest insults and reviling for love of me, and I  blush for shame that I am too weak, too cowardly to endure even the slightest insult for love of Thee. O my Divine Savior, give me Thy holy love; it alone can strengthen and encourage me to endure trials and sufferings with composure, even with a holy joy, in union with Thy sacred passion.

Wednesday - 15th Day of Lent

"And when He had said these things, one of the servants standing by, gave Jesus a blow, saying: 'Answerest Thou the high-priest so?' Jesus answered him: 'If I have spoken evil give testimony of the evil; but if well, why strikest thou Me?" (John 18, 22-23).

Prelude:

Behold Jesus with hands bound and eyes cast down, standing before the assembled grand council.

Affections:

O Jesus, Son of the Living God, Thou splendor of His glory, and of the same Divine Essence! How shamefully art Thou abused by Thy unworthy creatures! Where are ye, ye blessed spirits, ye angels of heaven? How can ye abide the unjust, cruel treatment thus accorded your king? O Sacred Face of my Divine Savior! My sins, too, are the cause of the injustice and abuse heaped upon Thee! Give me the grace of true compunction and heartfelt grief, that I may love Thee in return, sincerely repent of my sins, obtain pardon and follow Thee on the way of the cross, with grateful love, humility and patience.
